NEW SUICIDE PREVENTION COMMISSION COULD BE SET UP IN TWO WEEKS’ TIME

Guyana’s new Suicide Prevention Bill was successfully passed in the National Assembly recently. Now, the Ministry of Health is moving to set up the 17-member suicide prevention commission tasked with planning, designing and implementing public health programme to reduce suicides and attempted suicides, prepare a national suicide prevention plan among other responsibilities. The body, comprising of various stakeholders, will also advise the Health Minister on laws that need to be strengthened or enforced to enable policies and suicide countermeasures. At the sidelines of an event on Tuesday, Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony told the News Room that this commission should be set up in about two weeks’ time.
